Over the years, Nurlan Zhakupov worked as a financial analyst at ENRC, a business manager at Chambishi Metals PLC (Zambia, Kitwe), a project manager at Research, Investment and Development Ltd, an analyst on the value of the company's shares traded on the stock exchange, and the Credit Suisse base materials team.

In 2016-2017, he worked as Managing Director for Development and Investments of Kazatomprom JSC, in 2017-2019 he headed SEC Astana, since 2020 he has been Chairman of the Board of Kazakhstan Investment Development Fund (KIDF) Management Company.
